Happy Chinese New Year from all of us at NOIE/ TBIG! May you enjoy this special day with friends, family and loved ones. ... See MoreSee Less

One day before the Spring Festival, the celebration already began!

Today is Chinese New Year’s Eve, also called Chu Xi. It marks the last day of 2017 in the Chinese lunar calendar. The biggest event of any Chinese New Years Eve is the annual reunion dinner. People travel back to their hometown from thousands miles away just for that. In northern China, it is the tradition to make dumplings (jiaozi) after dinner to eat around midnight. Dumpling symbolizes wealth because its shape resembles a Chinese sycee. In the South, it is customary to make a glutinous new year cake (Niángāo) and send pieces of it as gifts to relatives and friends in the coming days.

After dinner, some families go to local temples hours before the new year begins to pray for a prosperous new year by lighting the first incense of the year. In modern practice, many households hold countdown parties. Traditionally, firecrackers are lit after midnight to scare away evil spirits with the household doors sealed, not to be reopened until the new morning in a ritual called opening the door of fortune.

To all of our friends on Facebook, happy Chinese New Year’s Eve!
