New Oasis is pleased to share (with permission) the following letter from a 2014-2015 host family:
Our family had been considering hosting an international student for several years. We wanted to share our home, family, and traditions with someone from another culture and wanted to experience a larger family. After learning about the New Oasis program, we were excited about our next adventure!
As with anything new, we were a bit anxious and uncertain. We were concerned how our prospective student would perform academically at Westchester (Country Day School), how well he would speak English and his willingness to participate in family activities. Our New Oasis (student) coordinator helped answer all our questions and explained that the students are eager to immerse themselves in American culture and they are tested to confirm their English skills are excellent so they can converse, as well as keep pace with Westchester academics.
New Oasis matched our family’s preferences with a student from a private school in Shanghai China. Hao Tong joined our family last August as a freshman and the experience has exceeded our expectations! We have enjoyed introducing him to our extended family, church activities and Westchester community. He embraced new events like school sports, State Fair, camping and pumpkin carving. Hao naturally fit into our family’s routines and traditions and he shares in family chores. We enjoy discussing his life in China and how it compares to his American experiences. As host parents, we delight in his accomplishments and we are proud of the brotherly bond he and TJ have developed.
We are in awe of Hao’s confidence (and his parents’ bravery) to leave the comfort of home in order to experience American culture and education. We are looking forward to Hao’s return to our family in August! We hope all Westchester families will thoughtfully consider hosting an international student. It is an enriching life experience for both your family and theirs!
